Xiang Yang

I am an oceanographer studying ocean biogeochemical cycles, particularly in the Southern Ocean. I combine shipboard hydrography, moorings, satellite observations, and Biogeochemical-Argo floats to investigate biophysical interactions, primary production, and changes in ocean carbon uptake. My current research integrates BGC-Argo observations with the Biogeochemical Southern Ocean State Estimate (B-SOSE) to examine the role of Antarctic Winter Water in the carbon cycle and its response to recent sea-ice change. Ultimately, I aim to use observational constraints to improve ocean biogeochemical models.

I received my PhD in 2026 from the University of Tasmania through a joint program with CSIRO, following a first-class Honours degree in 2022. In November 2025, I joined Professor Lilian Dove’s GATO group at the Georgia Institute of Technology to continue exploring the Southern Ocean.
