Raphaël Bajon

Raphaël Bajon

I’m a postdoctoral research scientist at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, working with the HI-Cycles group on the SOCCOM project. I’m French, and originally trained as an engineer before moving into ocean physics and biogeochemistry.

My general area of research focuses on the impact of humans on the ocean. Currently, I am examining this impact in terms of carbon uptake and storage, and previously through the transport of plastic debris by ocean currents.

My current work focuses on mapping global ocean carbon fluxes using BGC-Argo float data, and comparing these estimates against previous approaches such as those from the Global Carbon Project.

I completed my PhD at Ifremer, Brest, France (Laboratory for Ocean Physics and Satellite remote sensing, LOPS) on the Multiscale Analysis of Natural and Anthropogenic Carbon Dynamics in the North Atlantic Ocean (defended September 2025). Before turning to carbon, I studied the transport of plastic in the ocean during a research internship.

My training in France combined engineering and ocean/atmosphere sciences:
